Learn How to Play No-Limit Texas Hold’em

One of the most popular games in America today is No-Limit Texas Hold’em, which is an entertaining poker game that uniquely blends strategy, skill and luck. The game is easy to learn and fun to play, making it a prevalent feature at a myriad of different parties, including bachelor parties, corporate events, charity events and birthday celebrations.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the rules and how the game is played. The two players left of the dealer post “blinds,” meaning they put chips in the middle without seeing their cards to ensure there will be action every hand.

Each player at the table is dealt two hole cards, facedown.

After each player has their cards, the first round of betting begins. The first round of betting ends with the two players who posted their blinds. Depending on the action, players can fold, call or raise the pot.

Next, three “community cards” are dealt face up for the players still in the pot.  All players can use the community cards.  Then, there is another round of bets where players can check or raise the pot, or fold if someone else raises.

After the second round of bets, another community card, aptly named “the turn” is dealt face up and another round of betting ensues.

Lastly, after the third round of betting comes “the river,” which is the last community card. This is the final opportunity for players to bet. Once all bets are settled, the person with the best five card hand wins the pot.  Keep in mind, that players who stay through the final round of betting have 7 cards (5 community, 2 hole) they can use in order to make their best 5 card hand.

Things to Keep in Mind

A few tidbits to keep in mind when playing:

Normal poker rules apply in regards to hand ranking.  Therefore, the best hands are as follows 1) Royal Flush 2) Straight Flush 3) Four of a Kind 4) Full House 5) Straight 6) Three of a Kind 7) Two Pair 8) One Pair 9) High Card

Players can go all-in at any time (hence the name no-limit), meaning you can bet all of your chips at any given stage in the hand.

You can choose to play a cash game, or play a tournament

The game is easy to learn, but difficult to master. The more experience you have playing, the more strategy you can employ.
